Verified Purchase. I find Gustavo Dudamel Beethoven's 5th and 7th refreshing, original, electric, exciting, magical but above all beautiful.

It was like hearing these old favorites for the first time. I was first drawn to an articulation of lines, threads in Beethoven's fabric, that I'd never noticed, or perhaps better said, never noted before. Room is made for the diversity of line -- each can be heard, each contributing to the whole. The interpretation is fresh. Most noticed by me were the slow tempi: patience leaving room for dramatics, for accumulation.

But Dudamel and friends aren't shy when it comes to allegro con brio, as in the close to the seventh. Slightly faster than von Karajan, they make Kleiber and Norrington seem positively pokey. But the pace isn't simply show-off speed, rather a breezy flight to the finish with sweep and drive. Don't let that "youth orchestra" fool you. There's nothing second rate with their playing. And it's not just virtuosity, they play as one mind, with both softness and energy as called for.

To be sure the CD is well recorded. The sound is clear and crisp. Not the muddle we've learned to live with from the late analog years. I've listened to this CD a dozen times in the last week. I really believe it will stand the test of time.

Surely I will continue to listen to my other interpretations, but Gustova Dudamel now gets my first listen for these old favorites. Rather than spending time pondering whether or not Dudamel measures up to some other conductor's work, judge this cd on its own merits. The rising young star and his Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela do a splendid job with these symphonies. Dudamel is an astonishing talent with seemingly limitless potential.

There has not been a new conductor on the scene stirring the kind of interest Dudamel has in quite some time. I can't wait for the next few chapters in the story! Dudamel is an awesome conductor. I have many versions of Beethoven's symphonies. Bernstein's interpretation was too "elderly" and the tempo too slow. Toscanini's was very lively, Karajan's was too stoic. Dudamal's -- a breath of fresh air.

Both symphonies were well orchestrated. He is now with the LA symphonies. Way to go, DGG label. This is a winner. Beethoven 5's 1st movement is the most powerful and energetic performance I have ever heard. It can stand by itself, on its own as a single CD release. Faster tempo than other performances yet crystal clear without muddles. This youth orchestra was thoroughly impressive against renoun professional orchestras around the world. Dudamel is incomparable, as usual. This is my 3rd copy, as I wear them out!

Otherwise, well-grounded all the way. I found this CD to have very energetic readings of the two Beethoven symphonies. It was of particular interest to me because I had just attended a live performance of the orchestra, led by Dudamel.

The listening experience was enjoyable, by itself, but was further enhanced when I could picture the young players in my mind and marvel at their musicianship. Gustavo Dudamel is clearly an extraordinarily talented young conductor, and I look forward to hearing him grow with the LA Phil. While interesting, these recordings are not the interpretations of a mature conductor who has fully worked his way to an understanding of Beethoven. The orchestra, while excellent for a youth orchestra, is not world class.

And the recording itself is not one of DG's best. I think this CD is well worth listening to for the energy and potential Dudamel manifests. But with so many great recordings of these symphonies available, this is not among the best. This is a purchase for someone who already has one or several great recordings of these symphonies, and is looking for an opportunity to make the musical acquaintance of the young maestro Dudamel. Someday he will make mature recordings of these symphonies, and it will be interesting to look back at this disk and see how he grew.

I bought this after seeing the orchestra at the Henry Wood Proms, where they did a sensational concert which was greeted with wild applause, cheers and foot-stamping. It's brave of Dudamel to come up with this coupling, and on the whole it works. The orchestra as listed is huge, and if they all played, the ensemble and precision are remarkable. There is some very good solo playing, particularly from woodwind, and the recording is fine.

The inner parts in the strings are sonorous and clearly defined and the bass line is always powerful and purposeful. Speeds are mostly conventional, though the final movement of the 7th. Symphony is very fast indeed. There is some most attractive phrasing, but equally there are a few places which don't work so well, where, for whatever reason, something sounds not quite thought through or a little unconvincing the end of the second movement of the 7th.

I think the 7th. The performances are always interesting and usually involving - it's a great CD, and all credit to them - but these are not yet among the great interpretations of these works. But why should they be? These are tremendously talented very young musicians and their technical expertise, commitment and energy, harnessed by their remarkable young conductor, are well represented on this CD.

I have a few recordings with Gustavo Dudamel at the helm, and they're all great. Having two of my favourite Beethoven Symphonies on one CD is an added bonus. Report abuse. The CD arrived on schedule and was well packaged. Very impressive and the CD is fine though I think Beethoven 5 First movement is rather adrift with the famous opening them having last note of first phrase over held. Gustavo Dudamel conducts at the pace and expression that I find I like more than almost any other conductor.
